Ilveksen naisten liigajoukkue sai perjantaina vieraita Kanadasta, kun Reginan yliopiston joukkue Cougars saapui haastamaan tupsukorvia. Haastaminen jäikin pohjoisamerikkalaisten osaksi, sillä kotijoukkue oli lopulta parempi selvin 5−0-lukemin. Ilveksen maaleista neljä syntyi jo avauserässä.
− Oli meiltä alusta asti hyvä peli ja pääsimme toteuttamaan harjoittelemammiamme asioita. Olimme parempia, kuten tulostaulukin näyttää. Karvasimme hyvin ja saimme sitä kautta pidettyä hyökkäyspeliä yllä. Teimme heidän avauspelaamisen myös hankalaksi, Ilves-tähti Emma Ekoluoma virkkoi.

Kanadalaisjoukkueessa oli nuoren hyökkääjän mukaan joitain eroavaisuuksia perinteisiin kotimaisiin vastustajiin. Tupsukorvien ensimmäiset harjoitusottelut ovat sujuneet voitokkaissa merkeissä.
− He olivat paljon luisteluvoimaisempia ja terävämpiä luistimilla. Eivät he muuten kuitenkaan oikeastaan eronneet suomalaisjoukkueista.Olemme (harjoituskauden) alusta asti pelanneet hyvin yhteen ja ketjukoostumukset ovat pysyneet samoina. Joukkuehenkemme myös näkyy ulkopuolelle. Aina on tietysti myös parannettavaa, vaikka alku on ollutkin hyvä, Ekoluoma pohti.
Ekoluoma on ollut ketjukaveriensa Julia Kuusiston ja Alisa Makkosen kanssa Ilveksen ehdottomia onnistujia kauden alun TPS- ja Cougars-otteluissa.
Ensimmäisiä kokemuksia yhdessä
Ottelun alku oli hieman sekava, joskin Cougars pystyi pelaamaan kiekollistakin peliä Ekoluoman vietyä kotijoukkueen johtoon. Kanadalaisten yksilötaitojen ja yhteisten harjoitusten vajaus näkyi vaikeuksina ylittää keskialue organisoidusti. Toisessa erässä Ilves sai enemmän kiekonhallintaa ja pakotti Cougarsin vetäytymään puolustusalueelleen tiiviiksi muodoksi.
Kumpikaan joukkue ei saanut toisessa erässä montaa huippupaikkaa. Ilves vaihtoi pelin puolivälissä maalilleen Melisa Mörösen tilalle Neea Pohjamon, ja hänkin sai torjua muutaman maukkaan kiekon matsin aikana. Cougarsin pelaajien eväät olivat kuitenkin syödyt jo hyvissä ajoin ennen loppusummeria. Johanna Siiran sivaltama viides osuma oli kolmannessa erässä vain sinetti kamppailulle.
Cougarsin yritteliäimpiin ja näkyvimpiin yksilöihin lukeutuivat kapteeni Paige Hubbard ja varakapteeni Shaylee Scraba, jotka olivat tappiosta huolimatta innoissaan jääkiekkokokemuksesta Suomessa.
− Olimme aluksi vähän väsyneitä matkustamisesta johtuen, ja tämä oli ensimmäinen yhteinen pelimme, mutta paransimme loppua kohden. Harjoittelimme pelisysteemejämme ja kokeilimme eri asioita. Mielestäni toinen ja kolmas erä sujuivat paljon paremmin. Kun jatkamme tästä, pelimme tulee paranemaan kerta kerralta, Scraba pohti.
Tämä oli ensimmäinen yhteinen pelimme
Kapteeni Hubbard, 23, tähdentää, että joukkue pyrki asennoitumaan jokaiseen erään uudelleen. Cougars tiesi, että he pystyisivät parantamaan joitain pelillisiä asioita vähitellen − ja niin he tekivätkin. Kanadalaiset kehuvat vastustajiaan kautta linjan älykkäiksi pelaajiksi, jotka osoittivat olevansa hyviä kiekkoilijoita.
− Myös yhteyksien rakentaminen joukkueen ja ketjukavereiden kanssa pelien ja harjoitusten kautta auttaa paljon, Hubbard totesi jatkoakin silmällä pitäen.
Jäätä, vettä ja saunan höyryä
Cougars on Suomessa ollessaan ehtinyt myös kokea muutakin kuin jääkiekkoa. Scraba kertoo, että ryhmä on käynyt muun muassa uimassa sekä kierrellyt ympäriinsä. Joukkueella on nyt näkemyksensä jään jokaisesta olomuodosta: itse kiinteä jää, nestemäinen vesi sekä kaasu, tai tässä tapauksessa höyry, jota sinivalkoisten perinnetouhussa syntyy.
− Tiesimme, että käytte usein saunassa! Me teimme myös niin, ja se oli hieno ja hauska kokemus. Tykkäsimme siitä todella paljon, varakapteeni Scraba, 21, hehkutti.

Myös Suomen järvivesi sai pohjoisamerikkalaisilta kehut kirkkaudestaan. Se on kuulemma kirkkaampaa kuin heidän kotipuolessaan.
Jos sauna on osoitus lämpimästä, jopa kuumasta suomalaisten suosimasta aktiviteetista, pääsivät kanadalaiset kokemaan myös vilpoisen ilmapiirin Tesoman jäähallissa.
− Olemme tottuneet kylmyyteen, mutta emme silti odottaneet, että olisi näin kylmä! Täällä on todella kylmä halli, naurahti kapteeni Hubbard kaukalonlaidalla vaihtopenkillä haastattelua tehtäessä.
Seuraavaksi kaksikko matkaa Cougarsin kanssa Helsinkiin, jossa se kohtaa HIFK:n. Koko ryhmä odottaa innolla Suomen pääkaupungin näkemistä. Hubbard ja Scraba olivat mielissään siitä, mitä naisten jääkiekossa on käynnissä tällä hetkellä.
− Mielestäni naisten jääkiekko kasvaa, ja rakastan sitä! Median ja lehdistön huomio on lisääntynyt. On mahtavaa nähdä naispelaajien nimien nousevan esille, Scraba sanaili.
Yksi naisten jääkiekon nousun ajuri Pohjois-Amerikassa on varmasti ollut tuore ammattilaissarja PWHL, jonka ensimmäinen kausi paketoitiin viime keväänä.
Kiinnostus tarttuu jo varhain ja kestää pitkään
Cougars-kapteeni kertoi huomaavansa lajin kiinnostuksen kotona Saskatchewanin provinssissa arjen tasollakin.
− Autamme vetämään lapsille suunnattua leiriä joukkueessamme, ja mielestäni kasvu näkyy myös nuoremmissa sukupolvissa. Pelaajien määrät ovat kasvaneet joka vuosi, ja yhä enemmän nuoria tyttöjä pelaa jääkiekkoa ja kilpailee. Toivottavasti se johtaa tulevaisuudessa entistä kilpailukykyisempiin joukkueisiin, Hubbard lisäsi naisten lätkän kehityksestä.
Mitä haastateltavien omiin uriin tulee, Hubbard pohtii pelaamisen lopettamista tulevina vuosina ja siirtymistä kenties valmennushommiin. Scraba puolestaan aikoo vielä jatkaa aktiivista pelaamista.
− Olisi hienoa esimerkiksi saada mahdollisuus pelata täällä tai jossain toisessa liigassa tulevaisuudessa. Työskentelen kovasti sen eteen!
Cougars kohtaa Suomessa vielä Ilveksen ja HIFK:n lisäksi HPK:n ensi viikon puolella.

The Cougars were outplayed by Ilves but are enjoying their shared experiences in Finland − "We knew that you often go to the sauna!"
The University of Regina women's ice hockey team, the Cougars, travelled to Finland to play a practice match against the Ilves. Although the team faced a loss on the ice, Canadian forwards Paige Hubbard and Shaylee Scraba were pleased with the experiences the trip had offered so far. Along with their team, the duo had the opportunity to witness the skill of Finnish players on the ice and to enjoy the sauna and swimming in a lake.
The Ilves' women's league team hosted visitors from Canada on Friday, when the Cougars came to challenge them. However, the North Americans were truly left with the role of a challenger, as the home team ultimately won decisively with a score of 5−0. Four of Ilves' goals were scored in the first period alone.
"It was a good game for us from the start, and we were able to execute the things we had practiced. We were better, as the scoreboard shows. We forechecked well, which allowed us to maintain our offensive play. We also made it difficult for them to start their plays," said Ilves star Emma Ekoluoma.
Ekoluoma mentioned that the Canadian team had some differences compared to traditional domestic opponents. The first practice matches for the Ilves team have ended in victories.
"They were much faster and sharper on their skates. Other than that, they didn't really differ from Finnish teams. We have been playing well together since the beginning of the practice season, and the line combinations have remained the same. Our team spirit is also evident to outsiders. Of course, there is always room for improvement, even though the start has been good," Ekoluoma reflected.
Ekoluoma, along with her linemates Julia Kuusisto and Alisa Makkonen, has been one of Ilves' standout players in the early season matches against TPS Turku and the Cougars.
First experiences together
The start of the game was a bit chaotic, although the Cougars managed to play with the puck after Ekoluoma gave the home team the lead. The Canadians' individual skills and lack of joint practices were evident as they struggled to cross the neutral zone in an organized manner. In the second period, Ilves gained more puck possession and forced the Cougars to retreat into a tight defensive formation.
Neither team had many top scoring chances in the second period. Ilves changed their goaltender midway through the game, replacing Melisa Mörönen with Neea Pohjamo, who also had a few good saves during the match. However, the Cougars' efforts were exhausted − well before the final buzzer. The fifth goal, scored by Johanna Siira in the third period, was the final touch that sealed the victory.
Among the most active and visible players for the Cougars were captain Paige Hubbard and alternate captain Shaylee Scraba, who, despite the loss, were excited about their ice hockey experience in Finland.
"We were a little tired at first from the travel, and this was our first game together, but we improved as the game went on. We practiced our game systems and tried different things. I think the second and third periods went much better. As we continue from here, our game will improve with each match," Scraba reflected.
Captain Hubbard, 23, noted that the team tried to reset their mindset for each period. The Cougars knew they could gradually improve certain aspects of their game—and they did. The Canadians praised their opponents as smart players who demonstrated that they were good hockey players.
"Building connections with teammates and linemates through games and practices also helps a lot," Hubbard remarked, looking ahead.
Ice, water and sauna steam
During their time in Finland, the Cougars have experienced more than just hockey. Scraba mentioned that the group had gone swimming and explored the area. The team now understands ice in all its forms: the solid ice itself, liquid water, and gas − in this case, steam generated during the quintessential Finnish sauna experience.
"We knew that you often go to the sauna! We did it too, and it was a great and fun experience. We really enjoyed it," enthused assistant captain Scraba, 21.
The clear Finnish lake water also received praise from the North Americans. While the sauna is a warm, even hot, activity favored by Finns, the Canadians also got to experience the chilly atmosphere of the Tesoma ice rink.
"We're used to the cold, but we didn't expect it to be this cold! It's really cold here in the rink,"captain Hubbard laughs during her bench interview.
Next, the duo will travel to Helsinki with the Cougars to play against the reigning Finnish champions HIFK. The entire team is eagerly looking forward to seeing Finland's capital. Hubbard and Scraba are also pleased with what is currently happening in women's hockey.
"I think women's hockey is growing, which I love! Media and press attention has increased. It's great to see women's players' names getting out there," Scraba commented.
A key factor in the rise of women's hockey in North America has undoubtedly been the recent establishment of the PWHL, which concluded its inaugural season last spring.
Interest starts early and lasts long
Cougars' captain Hubbard mentioned noticing the growing interest in the sport of ice hockey at a grassroots level back home.
"We help run a camp for kids with our team, and I think the growth is visible in the younger generations as well. The number of players has increased every year, and more and more young girls are playing hockey and competing. Hopefully, this will lead to even more competitive teams in the future," Hubbard added regarding the development of women's hockey.
As for their own careers, Hubbard is considering retiring from playing in the coming years and possibly moving into coaching. Scraba, on the other hand, plans to continue playing actively.
"It would be great to get the opportunity to play here or in another league in the future. I'm working hard toward that!".
After playing against Ilves and HIFK, Cougars will also face HPK in next week.
