Jody Shelley excited to play at last

LIIGA / Kolumni
The newest NHL player in the Finnish Elite League, the Columbus Blue Jackets’ “goon” Jody Shelley is very excited to get to the show.

- I’ve been sitting around, waiting to play hockey for a while. This is a good opportunity to come over here, to work on my game, to work on my skill and my skating. This is a different style of hockey and I think it’s a good challenge for me. I’m excited.

- I’m not in the greatest shape as these guys are right now, but that’s why I’m here, you know.

Shelley gives respect to Finnish hockey although he’s not quite familiar with the country.

- I don’t know anything about Finland. I’ve had some Finns on my team, Pirjetä, Hyvönen, and I know Saku Koivu is one of the best guys in the NHL for skill. That’s all I know, I don’t know anything about the league except that the ice is bigger. Heard that the guys are very skilled, Finnish guys always have good shots, they are good skaters and good with puck. Three things I need to work on..

When asked about his style of play Shelley points out he’s not in Finland to fight, though he admits his role as a goon in the NHL.

- Yeah, I mean, that’s my job, but I didn’t come over here to think that I’m gonna be a sideshow or anything.. I’m not here to get penalties. But I don’t mind getting hit and it’s also probably good time getting hit. It’s been long enough.

The other Columbus player, defenseman Duvie Westcott played a role in Shelley’s decision to arrive to Jyväskylä. He is not afraid of dark and cold winter either.

- I called Duvie and he said it’s a good town, the fans are really nice and the hockey is really good. He said sometimes he misses home but he’s here because he likes it though. That was good to hear he’s this far from home and likes the town, likes the guys.

- I’m from Nova Scotia, man, and it’s very similar to this..

Shelley is frustrated about the lockout but hopes it will turn out to something positive.

- I didn’t think we’re gonna lock out but now we are in the middle of January. It’s really frustrating but it’s the business part of hockey and that’s too bad. This is the way it works, hopefully though this is all for a good reason.
